Who We Are

Based in Pittsburgh, HCS is the latest initiative of the Steel Valley Authority (SVA), an innovative regional authority that has been successfully restructuring troubled manufacturing firms for more than 25 years.

HCS’s predecessor, the Heartland Network, was co-founded by the SVA, the Steelworkers and AFL-CIO in 1995. Heartland’s initial purpose: to harness the power of workers’ capital to prudently invest in good jobs and revitalize industrial communities.

Since then, Heartland has helped bring attention to remarkable responsible pension capital investors in the U.S. and Canada. Heartland commissioned path-breaking conferences, published two pioneering books, numerous chapters and articles, and launched a “capital strategies” website to monitor the economy and track responsible investments.

The New Heartland Capital Strategies (HCS)

HCS’s Operating Advisors:  Heartland’s operating advisors are in the forefront of the movement for jobs-oriented strategies and responsible investments to revitalize the economy.

HCS’s Policy Advisors, led by Leo W. Gerard, United Steelworkers International President, includes labor and business, investment, academic and pension, and community and environmental leaders throughout the U.S. and Canada.

HCS’s Responsible Investment Network includes dozens of responsible capital funds in the U.S. and Canada that are “doing well by doing good.”  With their funds representing substantial assets, and capitalized in whole or part by workers’ capital, these investment leaders have invested profitably in good manufacturing enterprises, affordable housing and green construction, renewable energy and efficient transportation and other vital sectors.
