HCS’s  predecessor, the Heartland Network, was co-founded by the Steel Valley Authority (SVA), the Steelworkers and AFL-CIO in 1995 to harness the power of workers’ capital to prudently invest in good jobs and revitalize industrial communities.  Since then, Heartland has helped bring attention to a group of remarkable responsible investors, capitalized by pension funds, in the U.S. and Canada

Heartland commissioned path-breaking conferences and published pioneering books (along with numerous chapters and articles) about this critical field, and launched the “capital strategies” website to monitor the economy and track responsible investments.

In addition, Heartland’s partners and allies have forged new paths in the broader arenas of impact investments, economic and community revitalization, economic democracy, green jobs and sustainable futures.
