Welcome to the Heartland E-Journal, a regular digital newsletter of HCS Web that will incorporate the best features of the site and of the Heartland Web Blog. The E-Journal, like the Blog, will feature news updates, opinion and analysis pieces and success stories related to responsible investment (RI). An earlier rendition of the E-Journal, which ran for almost a decade, featured prestigious writers, authors and investment experts on pension funds and targeted investments, the economy and finance, manufacturing and housing, and similar topics.
The new E-Journal will also cover broad aspects of the real economy—you know, the one we live and work in. Responsible investment of workers’ savings and assets can be invested in the private economy to generate specific social, economic and environmental (ESG) benefits, along with the necessary financial returns.
The Role of Workers' Capital
We also want to know what roles our capital—the trillions of dollars in assets owned by working families—play in that economy (given the fact that institutional assets are such an important fulcrum for the real economy). Are our retirement and institutional assets being used to grow the economy or destroy value? Are “capital stewards” investing wisely and prudently for the future or are they contributing to another financial bubble?
Many capital stewards and responsible fund managers have been making solid investments over these past few years, avoiding the sub-prime debacle and other traps; and thereby creating or saving thousands of good jobs, building thousands of decent housing units and other important assets for society.
Reporting on Responsible Investing
They’ve also been getting smarter and bolder about investing in the next wave of responsible pension investments (beyond enterprises and jobs and housing). There’s a renewed sense of urgency that we need to address; both the lack of capital being invested in the real economy, and the need for new capital to invest in the emerging clean economy. HCS will track these developments and the policy implications surrounding them.
Heartland will not be telling anyone how to invest. But we hope to show the potential for amalgamating workers’ capital to create good jobs, strengthen regional economies and fight for a more sustainable vision of the economy.
We urge you to contribute your own news updates, articles, and opinion pieces for publication on the site. If you receive the E-Journal and do not wish to, simply unsubscribe.
