Educating the Next Generation in the New Year

January 6, 2017

Happy New Year from Heartland Headquarters! Thank you for your thoughtful commitments of time, energy and financial support in our common cause to invest responsibly in the real economy. Through your support, we are breaking through in our long-term quest to mainstream and strengthen responsible investments.

Heartland Capital Strategies (HCS) fosters a "Community of Practice" for responsible investments.  We are working in a united front to rebuild our cities, renew our industrial commons, grow the clean economy and make the "boss" more accountable.  In order to scale up the resources to accomplish these aims, we need to increase the share of institutional asset commitments for responsible investments that achieve positive economic impacts. These are Heartland's shared goals.

We are excited to be starting of 2017 on quite a high after launching our greatest breakthrough last year:  The Responsible Investor Handbook. Taking us into the new year is our Heartland Impact Investment Summer Fellowship project with Georgetown University's Kalmanovitz Initiative for Labor and the Working Poor. Things are progressing quickly with a hopeful start this summer.

Read on for details and highlights of our big audacious year and join us in 2017 in our campaign to educate the next generation of capital stewards!

Education:  Peer Learning & Action

Heartland is vested in a new fellowship initiative to educate the next generation of capital stewards.  The prospective Impact Investment Fellowship would be in collaboration with the Kalmanovitz Initiative for Labor and the Working Poor at Georgetown University. The fellowship would create a program for MBAs and other students with a focus on diversity.  GU would house students in the DC area and would be a hub for a group of feeder schools including MBA, sustainability programs, and labor programs.

A select group of important investment, labor, business and academic leaders met on December 13 at Georgetown University for this extraordinary opportunity. The plan was met with enthusiastic support, and the group, by itself, committed to pilot a group of at least ten fellows for Summer 2017 thus providing a pipeline for student prospects from three universities who were in attendance.  It is anticipated the program could grow to dozens of fellows over the next few years. Contact Heartland (412.342.0534) if you are interested in becoming a sponsor or hosting a fellow at your organization.
