Heartland Mounts the Challenge: Let's Rebuild America

Our Heartland Governing Board had an outstanding and productive meeting on April 4 in Washington, DC. Our sponsors and friends have been sharing the good word nationwide by broadcasting the Responsible Investor Handbook and implementing RI and impact investment strategies to grow the clean economy, rebuild our cities, renew the industrial commons and make the bosses more accountable. Together we are establishing a new impact investment fellowship in partnership with Georgetown and other universities "paying it forward."

And we have been commissioned by the Century Foundation to contribute to conference papers to be presented at an event in Washington, DC tentatively planned for June 13, to rebuild manufacturing cities and raise the wages of American workers.

In this issue we'll provide an update on the working being done and how you can join in our efforts!

THOUGHT LEADERSHIP AND BROADCASTING

The Responsible Investor Handbook continues to sell globally with over 2,000 copies sold in the first 6 months. Co-author Tom Croft has made book presentations at numerous conferences including:

  • Council of Institutional Investors (CII)

  • CSR Annual Summit

  • International Foundation

  • NECA-IBEW Benefits Conference

  • Massachusetts Building Trades

  • US SIF (in May)

The Handbook had also received reviews, highlights and/or acknowledgments from media, online and print publications:

PAYING IT FORWARD: EDUCATING THE NEXT GENERATION

Heartland recently partnered with Georgetown University's Kalmanovitz Initiative for Labor & the Working Poor to launch a new impact/responsible investment fellowship. We are thrilled to announce that our first 8-week cohort will begin at the end of May 2017! We had a great story on this program that was run in Pensions and Investments Magazine.

Fellows will receive a 3-day orientation session prior to beginning their assignments with Heartland sponsors and friends from:

With two dozen student applicants coming from backgrounds in finance, economics, and social justice, we plan to grow the program beyond the DC area and double or triple the number of fellowship hosts for Summer 2018.

Please get in touch with us if you're interested in sponsoring this exciting initiative or hosting a fellow!

BARNSTORMING THE RUST BELT, REBUILDING THE HEARTLAND

Heartland and its main sponsor, Steel Valley Authority, have been commissioned to contribute to papers to the prestigious Century Foundation (TCF). Revitalizing Manufacturing Communities: Building a High Road Commons for Manufacturing and Economic Recovery will be presented at a Washington DC conference in June 2017.

Jeff Madrick, acclaimed author and Director of the Bernard L. Schwartz Rediscovering Government Initiative at TCF, is playing a key role in setting up the conference. Anticipated attendees will hail from both sides of the aisle on Capitol Hill, those with a vested interest in rebuilding manufacturing and infrastructure, and groups who can promote new apprenticeship approaches for workers.

It is anticipated the conference and paper will lead to a new round of roadshows touting a campaign to rebuild high wage jobs and revitalize the rust belt. In collaboration with TCF, the roadshows will bring together responsible investing funders with unions, mayors, treasurers, grass roots group and others to amplify the bullhorns! Our friends at the AFL-CIO Housing Investment Trust are on a similar path with their Midwest@Work program which is dedicating over $2 billion in nine Midwest cities to spur economic development.
