Educating the Next Generation

In December of 2016, a groundbreaking meeting was held at Georgetown University to join important investment, labor, business and academic leaders. This group recognized the importance of accelerating the next generation of capital stewards and responsible impact investors by taking the steps needed to establish the Labor Capital Fellowship!

This project was organized by Heartland Capital Strategies (HCS) and the Kalmanovitz Initiative for Labor and the Working Poor at Georgetown University (KI). HCS has built a "Community of Practice" around responsible investments. Our partners work in a united front mobilizing capital to rebuild cities, renew the industrial commons, grow the clean economy and make the boss more accountable. KI develops creative strategies and innovative public policy to improve workers' lives in an ever-changing economy. We work to advance prosperity, broadly-shared economic justice, and respect for the dignity of labor.

The Fellowship program launched in May 2017 with students being placed at organizations including the AFL-CIO Housing Investment Trust, KPS Capital Partners, LiUNA, Smart Growth America, and Ullico. The above document provides a comprehensive overview of the curriculum provided and opportunities the students received during their 8-week educational experience.

You are invited to participate in our 2018 Fellowship Program in one (or more) of the following ways:

  • Host a Fellow at your organization

  • Become a Fellowship sponsor to aid in the expenses of "paying it forward" in educating this next generation of responsible investors

  • Volunteer as a presenter during orientation or offer a workshop

  • Serve as part of the Labor Capital Fellowship Advisory Board to recruit and assist in laying the groundwork for a more beneficial program

In launching this exciting initiative, we have begun grooming future investment leaders and growing a responsible network that will elevate students and campuses to join the cause.  Our mission is to provide a transformative career path for serious students to change the world and restore the commonwealth for all.
