We wrapped up the 2025 LCS Fellowship on a high note with a meaningful visit to Georgetown’s Kalmanovitz Initiative, a core partner of the LCS program. There, fellows explored the roots of the labor movement and connected with the incredible KI team. We capped off the evening with a lively reception generously hosted by the AFL-CIO Housing Investment Trust, where fellows shared stories from the summer, built connections, and celebrated all they had accomplished together.
Field Trip: Kalmanovitz Initiative for Labor and the Working Poor & IBEW Museum
The Fellows started the day with a campus tour of Georgetown, led by Dr. Dawn Carpenter, who walked them through the university’s history and ties to social justice. Afterward, they met with the team at the Kalmanovitz Initiative and a few of their interns to learn about their personal journeys into labor work and what drives their passion for the movement. Before wrapping up, everyone joined in on a fun labor and finance trivia game. The group then headed to the IBEW, where they toured the union’s museum and learned more about its history and the broader role unions have played in shaping workers’ rights.
Final Reception: The Fairmont Hotel
We closed out the day with a fun reception at the Fairmont Hotel, generously hosted again by the AFL-CIO Housing Investment Trust. Fellows were joined by members of the HIT team, a few other host partners like the AFL-CIO and Ullico, as well as several former fellows and current LCS board members. Truly making it a full-circle night for the fellowship.
Throughout the evening, fellows shared stories from their summer experiences, reconnected with peer fellows, and engaged in meaningful conversations with the people who continue to shape and support the program. This night served as a memorable end to an impactful summer.
Thank You!
A huge thank you to our partners at Georgetown’s Kalmanovitz Initiative and the AFL-CIO HIT for their continued support of Heartland and the LCS Fellowship. Your partnership helps make this experience possible year after year. We’re also deeply grateful to all of our 2025 host organizations for welcoming our fellows and helping make this summer such a success. We could not do it without you all.
